Checkmate Cancer Chess Tournament- May ’26 Results

We found ourselves with a wonderful opportunity to fundraise and support Cancer Research in Augusta, GA. Checkmate Cancer was held at the Knox Foundation Community Center at the M. Bert Storey Research Building for our May event!

Open Section

Abigail Lin and Edward Harris joined play this month as we welcomed the highest player the Chess League has ever seen. We were happy to host Robert Roszkowiak from Savannah, GA. Robert goes perfect on the day finishing 3.0 / 3 points with a 1st place finish, followed by Abigail Lin (2nd Place) and Alexander Looney (3rd Place).

William Bowman maintains the a slim points lead over Alexander Looney.

U1300 Section

A handful of players returned to the board amongst the many community activities, performances and parties to see you would fair the best in supporting Cancer Research! Newcomer Grayson Zgol goes perfect (3.0 / 3 points) through the field with a 1st Place finish. Rick Hardy and Vendant Tiwari finish tied for 2nd with 2.0 / 3 points.

Ryan Kim maintains his overall lead in the U1300 Chess League Standings with Peter Newton, Vedant Tiwari and Gurnoor Farmaha closely. Grayson Zgol rockets straight through the U1300 section into the Open Field.

U800 Section

Vihaan Shah quietly and politely waited his turned to show-off his opening and calculation skill, dazeling those in his group going a perfect 4.0 / 4 points for his 1st Place Finish. Atharva Mishra continues his impressive year, finishing 3.0 / 4 points in a tie with Jacob Barnes for 2nd Place

Vihaan advances to the U1300 Section, leaving Atharva Mishra to retain the top spot in the U800 Chess League standing with Xenghwen (George) Xiang and Alan Li closely behind.

U400 Section

GIRL POWER! Zoya Looney and Ellie Baura finish as the top two finishers that entered in the U400 section.

Brendan Barnes returns to the U400 Section, but Zoya Looney now owns the top spot in the standings!
